The Naked Truth: Investing in the Stock Play of a Lifetime tells the incredible true story of CMKM Diamonds (better known as CMKX), a Canadian diamond mining company that moved to Las Vegas and eventually made national headlines. In January of 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada, a group of con artists fronted by a shadowy character named John Edwards approached a prison guard turned small time swindler from Saskatchewan named Urban Casavant. Together, they set into motion a scam involving 1.9 million acres of supposed diamond, gold, zinc, and uranium rich property in Canada.
Stories of potential riches and hopes of instant wealth enticed investors to pour over $250 million into the company in a little over two years. The fever-pitch excitement was fueled by giant “GOT CMKX?” billboards in Las Vegas, company-sponsored National Hot Rod Association races, lavish parties thrown by company officials for shareholders, and CEO Urban Casavant’s promise that he would create a “million millionaires.” CMKX even brought in legendary figures, nationally-known attorneys, and celebrities to add credibility to the scam.
Instead, lives were ruined, homes were lost, and retirement funds were decimated as frustrated shareholders began to turn first on each other, and then on company insiders, and finally on Casavant himself. Even U.S. serving in Iraq and Afghanistan were victimized by this group of ruthless con artists, who had ties extending from Canada and the United States to Europe and China. In the meantime, Edwards, Casavant, and a long list of crooks lived like kings, spending shareholders’ money on lavish homes and extravagant lifestyles, and gambling away millions in Las Vegas casinos.
Were the stories of potential riches real? Were there really truckloads of diamonds waiting to be shipped out from their claims, or is it all part of a well-orchestrated scam to steal over $250 million dollars from an estimated 50,000 shareholders? Was it really, as internet websites touted, “The Stock Play of a Lifetime”?
This is the story of how three shareholders from small-town Texas banded together in a three year crusade to bring justice to 50,000 shareholders who were seemingly ignored by the federal agencies whose job it was to protect them. In a story of mystery and intrigue, shareholder advocate John Martin, east Texas. Attorney Bill Frizzell, and Urban “True Believer” turned company CEO Kevin West band together with CMKX shareholders to investigate and expose one of the largest frauds in the history of the U.S. stock market.
UPDATE, July 10, 2008: Just before the The Naked Truth: Investing in the Stock Play of a Lifetime went to press, the SEC filed charges against 11 individuals and 3 companies in the CMKX case. On July 2, 2008, CMKM Diamonds, Inc., under current CEO Kevin West and legal counsel Bill Frizzell was awarded a $33,675,365 judgment against John Edwards in the first of what could turn out to be over a hundred lawsuits filed against the crooks, corrupt brokers, and even the financial system itself. SEC Inspector General David Kotz is currently reviewing information that could trigger a full-scale investigation into the SEC’s failure to protect over 50,000 CMKX shareholders. An ongoing multi-year investigation by the FBI, DOJ, and IRS has yet to produce criminal charges against anyone involved in the scheme.
