- Cry Havoc! And Let Loose the Dogs....
by Robin Buckallew Am I living in an episode of the Twilight Zone? Or in some parallel, bizarro universe? Or am I really hearing all the nonsense that’s being spewed out of the TV, coming across the Internet, and generally being projected out into the airwaves and cyberspace from the right wing crazy-making machine? Unfortunately, I’m afraid it’s the last. This isn’t a nightmare I’m going to wake up from, this is “real life” – such as no reality show would be able to bring themselves to air. It’s too unbelievable for even Jerry Springer to touch. Yes, I’m talking about all the whooping and hollering going on over at Asylum Central about the recent terrorist attack on a Christmas Day flight. The Underpants Bomber, I believe they’re calling him (the most unfortunate of all monikers, I’m afraid. It makes him seem more silly than sinister, and isn’t a particularly dignified phrase for anyone…which is all right, I suppose, because our media have lost all their dignity long ago).
The attack by former Presidential Nanny, Dick Cheney, was unconscionable and irresponsible, to say nothing of disgusting. It is more than obvious that the right wing screaming heads are much more interested in creating an international incident that they can use to their favor in the 2010 elections than they are in protecting the safety of this country and its citizens. Chris Matthews said it best: he said that all the right wingers were using this latest incident as a checklist for all the countries they want to invade, and that they are interested in a full-scale war against Islam. This would be nutty enough if there were reason to follow such a plan, and if ALL of Christendom were behind us; unfortunately, there are over one billion Muslims, and only 300 million Americans, most of whom aren’t particularly interested in traveling to the exotic Middle East to get their heads blown off. Even if it wasn’t insanely stupid as a policy, it’s immoral, unethical, and very likely illegal, at least for any country that takes international treaties seriously. We didn’t – for eight looooonnnnnggggg years, we didn’t.
Now, it appears we might be ready to take such pesky things as the Geneva Convention seriously, and that’s something Cheney and Friends just can’t stand. So, they’ve taken the freak show on the road once again, anywhere they can get people to listen to them. Which, by my reckoning, includes at least Fox News, and CNN seems to want to walk the line between the two, treating the foaming at the mouth nut jobs with as much gravitas as they treat the serious analysts that are calling for a somewhat more reasoned, measured, and well thought out response. Bomb Yemen? God forbid. Bomb Nigeria? Bad plan. Maybe we should just make it easy, and bomb the Netherlands…after all, that’s where the plane took off from. (Stop just a minute and take a deep breath right here….I’M KIDDING! Repeat after me….THIS WOMAN DOES NOT THINK WE SHOULD BOMB THE NETHERLANDS. SHE’S TRYING TO USE HUMOR AND IRONY TO MAKE A POINT.)
Actually, I have a better idea. Instead of giving Ringmaster Dick and his clown troupe the national spotlight yet again, why don’t we take preventive action before they hurt themselves? Why don’t we lock all of them up in the lunatic asylum where they belong until they are able to communicate coherently and rationally? I think it’s time we lock up the entire Republican Party, for their own good, and the good of everyone else. They can be released as soon as they are able to give a coherent version of the events of the last decade that bears some resemblance to reality as it has been recorded. I’m not suggesting we should require that they no longer be Republicans, or change their political positions on major issues. After all, this is America, and everyone has a right to be wrong. In fact, they can remain insane if they wish. In America, everyone has a right to be insane, as well. We will lock them up only so long as they represent a clear and present danger to themselves and to the country, as we would any other suicidal or homicidal madman. It’s time to make the world safe again for sanity.
